In baseball news, SF Giant OF Barry Bonds is now 1 home run away from tying Hammerin' Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755. Bonds hit #754 in a home win in San Francisco against the Florida Marlins. Other players approaching milestones: NY Yankee 3B Alex Rodriguez connect on homer #499 in a Yankee win over the Kansas City Royals. At only 32 years of age, A-Rod is bidding to become the youngest player to hit 500 career home runs. NY Mets lefty starting pitcher Tom Glavine won his 299th career game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Glavine is one win away from reaching the exclusive 300 career win plateau. The feel good story of last week was the return of Boston Red Sox lefty starting pitcher Jon Lester. Lester was diagnosed last year with anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a treatable form of cancer, after going 7-2 as a rookie. He missed the remainder of the season for treatment, & there was doubt he would ever pitch again. Lester has defeated the cancer & returned in a huge & courageous way by going 6 innings & pitching an excellent game, shutting down a deep & talented Cleveland Indians offense by only giving up 2 runs & 5 hits, leading in a 6-2 Red Sox victory. Congrats to 2 modern day baseball legends inducted into the Hall of Fame, Cal Ripken, Jr & Tony Gwynn.
In football news, NFL running back great Curtis Martin announced his retirement due to serious knee injuries. Martin finishes his career as one of the most consistent & mentally tough running backs to ever play the game, rushing for 14,101 career yards, placing him 4th on the all-time list. Martin & Hall of Famer Barry Sanders are the only running backs in NFL history to rush for 1,000+ yards their 1st 10 seasons in the league. C-Mart is now setting his sights on becoming a part-owner of an NFL franchise in the very near future. Best of luck to Curtis! Congrats to the Arena League Football Champs, the San Jose SaberCats! It's their 3rd championship. They defeated the Columbus Destroyers, 55-33. Embattled former #1 draft pick QB Tim Couch is back in the NFL. He signed a 2 year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
